This collection was inspired by the ever present and regenerating force of nature. A prolonged stay in the country inspired the artist to capture growing branches and sprouts in an abstract bronze sculpture. The Surculus alludes to a branch that undulates its way up to the gently lit paper shade and reaches beyond it with its highly polished finial. Darker patination and deeper ridges at the bottom of the lamp transition to gentler ridges and lighter colors at the top symbolizing tender new growth and the rejuvenation of the old. The folds of the paper shade echo the ridges in the bronze base and catch the light like delicate flower petals. The artist created six different versions of finials, giving each piece a different personality.
The body of the Surculus Lamp is executed as a bronze sculpture in the lost wax method. Each piece is made by hand, carefully polished and patinated therefore each lamp is unique. The shade is crafted by the artist from Japanese Hosho paper.
The Surculus lamp combines the old traditions of handcrafted bronze as well as new technology. Its form and purpose transitions from traditional candlestick to contemporary portable, wireless, rechargeable LED light.
